Profile of a Leader: Dr. Philip Fitch Vincent

Dr. Philip Fitch Vincent brings more than 20 successful years of experience in education to his presentations, workshops, and best Phil Web Pic.jpegselling books. With an academic background in philosophy, religion, and psychology, Dr. Vincent received his master's degree in education from Appalachian State University in 1979 and his doctor of education degree in curriculum and instruction from North Carolina State University in 1991.

He has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in North Carolina and Alaska, and has taught graduate education courses at North Carolina State University. He has been director of middle-grades education in a large and diverse school system, and had served as director of the Center for Ethics, Public Policy and Leadership at Greensboro College, Greensboro, North Carolina.

In North Carolina alone, Dr. Vincent has worked with more than 33 school districts in formulating and implementing their character education programs as well as consulting with educators in 25 other states. Among his many awards are a Teaching Merit Award, a grant from the Council for Basic Education, and Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Delta Kappa induction.

The CBS News with Dan Rather and USA Today have featured Dr. Vincent's staff development work for school civility. He has written numerous journal articles about developing character, gifted education, computer ethics, and working with at-risk students in an alternative classroom setting. He is a regular contributor to various educational publications.

Professional Work Experience 

Director (June 1995 - present). Character Development Group, Chapel Hill and Greensboro, NC.

There are two components of the Character Development Group. Character Development Consulting works with school districts, community groups, university, state and regional organizations in providing training and evaluation of character education efforts. Character Development Publishing has published 40 books focusing on character education. I have worked in 40 states and Canada doing keynotes, breakout sessions, day-long trainings, panel discussions, community organization, parent and school board meetings. Previous to my work with the Character Development Group, I taught grades K-12 as well as being a site based and central office administrator. Before working as a teacher, many years ago, I was a radio announcer and music director at a campus radio station as well as being a six foot chicken mascot for a large FM station! Cluck on the dial!!!!!

January 2007. Restoring School Civility: An Administrative Perspective. Worked with principals in St. Louis City Schools as well as 30 principals from the metropolitan St. Louis area. University of Missouri-St. Louis.

November 2006. Restoring School Civility DVD. West Palm Beach School System. The 90 minute DVD is now available on Blackboard for all West Palm Beach Teachers. Also included is a 40 page training manual.

November 2006. Three Keynote Addresses over a day. The Role of Adults in Fostering Social and Moral Development in Children. covering entire certified and classified staff of Avon-Maitland School District. Ontario, Canada.
