Professional Work Experience
Partner (2007-present), Mded Inc. (Multi-Dimensional Education )Boone, NC. MDed is a research and consulting company that assists schools and school districts with data-driven diagnostic consulting and educational evaluation efforts.
Director (June 1995 –June 2009). Character Development Group, Boone, NC.
There are two components of the Character Development Group. Character Development Consulting worked with school districts, community groups, university, state and regional organizations in providing training and evaluation of character education efforts. Character Development Publishing has published 40 books focusing on character education. While director I worked in 40 states and Canada doing keynotes, breakout sessions, day-long trainings, panel discussions, community organization, parent and school board meetings. I also authored or co-authored four large (7.5 million dollars) federal research grants and contributed to numerous others.
Project Director (July 2006 –July 2010). Director of Guilford County Schools/Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Federal Character Education Grant.
My initial duties included: managing research and programmatic staffs, organizing interventions, working with community groups, principals and counselors and training assistant director and “character coach” for the 2008-2009 school year. I am presently coordinating and completing the final financial and programmatic reports to the US Department of Education as well as assisting the project researchers in their final year of the grant.
Director of Middle Grades Education (June 1990 - June 1995). Catawba County Schools. Newton, NC.
I worked with principals to develop consistency of expectations and instruction within the middle school grades and also served the elementary schools at the 6th grade level. I also supervised initially certified middle school teachers.
Acting Principal (November 1994 – June 1995). Mid-Tech – Catawba County Schools. Newton, NC.
I replaced a principal and worked to redirect this alternative school both instructionally and behaviorally. I did this while still Director of Middle Grades Education.
Facilitator of Gifted Education (August 1988 – June 1990). Asheboro City Schools, Asheboro, NC.
I worked at the two middle schools to improve curriculum for the advanced learner as well as facilitating instruction for all students. I also taught four courses per year for Greensboro City School to certify teachers in gifted education. During the summers, I taught and worked with teachers in the Governors School of North Carolina – Eastern Campus and worked with regional centers in offering 30 hour trainings in gifted education.

I worked part-time at Underwood Elementary School and Enloe High Schools. At Underwood, I taught various elective classes: Art and Architecture and Logic and You – An Introduction to Thinking. At Enloe, I taught Philosophy and worked as a student advisor and administrator assistant.

I taught Education 496, "Teaching Methods in the Middle Years - Social Studies.". Supervised nine middle school student teachers. Taught Education 205, "Introduction to Teaching Humanities and Social Sciences." Helped coordinate student practicum’s. Participated as a researcher in a qualitative study on the education of Vietnamese and other immigrant groups in the community college system as they sought adult basic education.

I developed four 15 hour classes that were teachers applied towards their certification: and worked part-time in certifying teachers throughout North Carolina in Gifted Education (1) Introduction to the Gifted, (2) Teaching the Gifted in the Regular Classroom, (3) Curriculum Models and the Gifted Learner, (4) Counseling the Gifted Child.

Significant Research Grants
2006. Guilford County/Winston Salem/Forsyth County Middle School Grant. Co-author and director of a 1.7 million dollar grant from the US Department of Education – Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools to quantitatively and qualitatively assess how middle school students grow socially and morally based on various interventions.
2005. West Virginia Character Education Grant – Contributor and facilitator. In collaboration with the West Virginia Department of Education , I co-authored a 1.9 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education – Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools to longitudinally study character development in grades K-12 involving four rural experimental schools and their communities and four control schools and their communities over 4 years.
2002. Charlotte/Mecklenburg Character Education Grant –author and lead facilitator. In collaboration with Charlotte/Mecklenburg Schools in Charlotte, NC, I authored a 2.1 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education – Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools to longitudinally study how 25 schools worked to develop their own character education program based on their measured social and academic needs.
1995. North Carolina Character Education Grant – Co-author and trainer. In collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, I co-authored a 750,000 dollar grant from the U.S. Department Education – Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools to develop curriculum resources and to help address character education within the “ethos” or life of the schools.
